Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., pre«id«l at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court when police cases were taken. Elizabeth Brady and Victor King wcr« both charged with being rogiws ami vagabonds, in that they wore found by night, without lawful excuse, in an ujv tenanted house in Tui-street. Brady, who has only just been released from gaol, pleaded not guilty, stating that she had gone into the hotree to get her clothes. She had occupied rooms in tho house for some time. King wont toth« house at her invitation to take the box away. "It does not seem likely th*6 you would go to a house for that purposa at 11 o'clock at night," said his Worship. "I must convict you both." Sentences of one month's imprisonment were imposed. Yesterday George M 'Carter, c!tftr£«H4 with drunkenness, was given a chance yesterday to go into the country bo som« work, said to be awaiting him. Ho appeared in the dock again this morning on a aimilar charge. A fiat «f 20s wa» imposed, the alternative being fixed al three days in gaol. Daniel Sullivan, Bad ford James Shaweross, and Robert AndwYson wore convicted for being drunk, and fiwd 10«, in default forty-eight hours in ga*Vl. Throe first offenders were leniently dealt with. Whep arrested last night Frank Adair stated that he had been ottfc of prison a, fortnight only; that ho had no money, and nowheie to go. Ho was charged to-day with being idle and disorderly, without any lawful means of support, and sent to gaol for a month. Thomas Turner, a wharf labourer, who was arrested yesterday on a charge alleging the theft of three bottles of Schnapps, th* property of W. Tnrnbull and Co., Ltd., waft remanded until to« movrow. Kail was allowed in the sum, of £5. Accused was represented by Mr. J. F. W. Dickson. Having been a.rre*t«<l a* Auckland oft » warrntit i?eued ot Wellington, Fred, erieb Logan appeared to answer a charge of theft, on tho 17th mat, of a watch, a ch^in, and a sovereign eate, and JOO 10& in money, making a total value of £25, from Dsniel o'Sulliva.tt. He was remanded until sth August. Chief Detective Broberg asked for substantial bail. Bail w,v fixed at £60, or two sureties of £25.
