MAHENO'S FAST RUN
~ .&. NEW;ENGINES. WORK SMOOTHLY. (BY TELEORAPIIi—PRF.PS' ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, 26th July. The Maheno arrived from Sydney at 11 o'clock on Saturday night, the passage of 1281 miles being accomplished in- the smart time of 3 days 7 hours 58 minutes actual steaming- time. A strong set in the ocean currents was met with for the first 24 hours. This meant a loss of about 14 ( miles in a day's run. The Maheno averaged 16 knots mroiighpnt tho run, and tho distance of 311 miles from .Cape ■ Maria Van Diemen to Auckland was accomnlbhed at a speed of 17' knots.' The steamer's new engines were well tested on, tho run and her officers state that tho vessel has lost that long rolling motion which was' so conspicuous when steaming with her old turbines. The new geared turbines also effected a saving of 20 per cent, in the Maheno's coal consumption.
