ABOUT A LEAFLET

CANON GARLAND AND MR JOHN CAUGHLEY. The following passages • appeared in the Dominion's report (9th July) of the Anglican Synod :—' Canon Garland then went on to deal with Leaflet No. 7, recently issued by tho New Zealand National Schools De*fence League. He said that immediately he saw this leaflet he cabled as follows (on 2nd July) to Sydney :—: — "Director Education, "Sydney. " Statement published that Wilkins, secretary Education Council, July, 1900, issued circular against Ministers proselytising in visiting classes* Please cable date Wilkin's death date, circular referred to, and its purport. " CANON GARLAND." The reply, which was dated 7th July, was contained in the following cable :—: — " Mr. Wilkins retire/ 1884, died 1892, could not therefore have issued circular referred to by you, which cannot be identified. > "P. BOARD, ' "Director of Education, "Sydney, N.S.W." Much laughter and loud applause followed the reading of the reply. Canon Garland, continuing his address, pointed out that the laity in the Synod, representing various classes of men, were for the motion, and that the only voices raised against it were those 'of two clergymen. He concluded with the declaration that they would give no rest, and take no rest, until the Bible was honoured and taught in the schools. (Applause.) AN EFFECTIVE REPLY. Mr. Caughley has telegraphed a reply from, Christchurch :—"Canon Garland's alleged exposure ,pf the opposition Hague's leaflet is merely a trick over the date. The circular is absolutely authentic. A copy was issued from the Education Office, Sydney,- on 15th July, 1900, over the signature of Wilkins. Tho Wilkins circular has been thirty years in force. It was in force in 1900, and is .still force. It was published again in Queensland's Hansard during Canon Garland's campaign."
