"WORSE THAN RUSSIA."
Sometimes from the lips of a politician a.nd occasionally from the lips of a disgruntled platform speaker we hear that "New Zealand ie worse than Russia." This is not likely to find a ready endorsement from chess players, seeing that Dr. Lacker — a Professor of Mathematics who has been chess champion of the world for the past twenty yearsbeing a Jew only received permission to stay in Russia, as long as he was playing in tha big international tourney at St. Petersburg or giving chess exhibitions ! So, at any rate, states the Ruskoe Slovo. It is here interesting to note that Wilhelm Steinitz, who held the world championship for the twenty-eight years preceding his dethronement by Dr. Lasker, was likewise a Jew. Messrs. Rubinstein (champion of Russia), Schlechter (champion of Austria), Tarrasch (champion of Germany), and Janowski (champion of France) are also of the. Jewish persuasion. As a chess wag with an-old hymn in his mind dryly remarked, "The children of the Hebrews with the palms before us go."
