DEFENCE CHANGES NEW APPOINTMENTS MADE

ADMINISTRATIVE SIDE. HEADQUARTERS STRENGTHENED The Defence authorities have not been long in acting upon General Sir lan Hamilton's report, which recommended that a considerable number of alterations should be made upon the Staff, particularly so 'far as administration is concerned. His Excellency the Governor (Lord Liverpool) has approved of the following appointments, which will be notified in this week's Gazette : Hon. Major James O'Sullivan, Director of Equipment and Stores, to be Assistant Quartermaster General at Headquarters, and to be attached to the New Zealand Staff Corps while so employed. Captain F. B. Mabin (retired list), Director of Accounts, to be Assistant Quartermaster General at Headquarters, with the honorary rauk 'of Major, and to be attached to the New Zealand Staff whilst so employed. Major H. H. Browne, N.Z.S.C, from Assistant Quartermaster-General at headquarters to command an area group, vice Captain J. E. Barton, N.Z.S.C. Captain H. C Nutsford, N.Z.S.C, instructor in mounted duties at Auckland, to be Assistant Quartermaster-General at Auckland, vice Captain R. S. Matthews, N.Z.S.C. Captain R. S. Matthews, N.Z.S.C, from Assistant Adjutant and Quarter-master-General at Auckland to command an area group, vice Captain J. R. Henderson, N.Z.S.C. Captain J. R. Henderson, N.Z.S.C, from Officer Commanding Milton area in Otago to be Assistant QuartermasterGeneral at headquarters, vice Major H. H. Browne. The following Assistant Adjutants and Quartermasters-General have been appointed Assistant Quartermasters-General in districts: Captain W. L. Robinson, Captain W. H. Meddings, Captain A. C. Nutsford, and Captain J. T. Bosworth, all N.Z.S.C ■ Major (temporary Lieut. -Colonel) G. N. Johnston, Royal Artillery, Director of Ordnance, to be Inspector of Artillery, Coast Defences, Guns and Ammunition. Lieutenant (temporary Captain) H. M. Edwards, Royal Engineers, Assistant Director and Instructor in Engineers' duties, to be Inspector of Engineers. Major T. W. t M'Donald. N.Z.S.C, Officer Commanding Paeroa area group, to be General Staff Officer at Dunedin, vice Captain J. D. Grant, V.C., Imperial General Staff. Lieutenant (temporary Captain) G. C. S. Dyer, N.Z.S.C, to command an area group, vice Major T. W. ( M'Donald. Major Browne will go to Paeroa and Captain Matthews to Nelson. < Major F. E. Johnston, North Stat fordsfiiro Regiment, who has been appointed to the 'command of the Wellington district for one year,- as from the 16th inst., has been granted the temporary rahk of colonel. Colonel Johnston is a son\pf the Hon. C. J, Johnston, of Wellington, and was born in the district of which he will so soon, assume the military command. Colonel Chaytor, the present commander of the Wellington district, who has been appointed Adjutant-General, in succession to Lieut. -Colonel Collins, wha ie returning to England, will take up his iiew duties as from the 16th met.
