ALLEGED ATTEMPT TO WRECK A TRAIN ARRESTED MAN IN COURT. (IT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. A sensational sequel to recent rumours of attempts to wreck the Main Trunk train by placing a beam across :,he tails at Awapuni was enacted in the Magistrate's Court this morning, when a young man named John Mason 'vas charged that, on Bth July, at Awapuni, he did wilfully place an obstruction on the railway line between Palmerston and Longburn. Detectives Quirke and Sweeney made the arrest on Saturday. A remand was granted to Tuesday. 21st inst.^ Accused's counsel (Mr. In* es) asked for bail, but this was opposed by Sub-Inspector Marsack, who B..id the offence was a very oerious one Accused did not appear to be compos mentis, and with men in that condition there was no security that they might not repeat the offence.
