The Building Employers' Federation is taking a ballot on the question of a national lock-out owing to the London strike. AFTERNOON SHIFT IN MINES. EIGHT HUNDRED SUMMONSES ISSUED. (Received June 24, 8.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. At the instance of Mr. Estell, Minister for Labour, eight hundred summonses have been issued against miners for refusing to work the afternoon shift. They are called on to show cause why the penalty of £50 each* should not be imposed, for participating "in a strike. AUSTRALIAN CARPENTERS' DEMAND. FORTY-FOUITioUR WEEK. REFUSAL BY ARBITRATION COURT. (Received June 24, 8.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. On appeal by the master builders, the Arbitration Court refused the carpenters' demand for a reduction in the number of working hours to forty-four weekly, and also declined to grant preference. The men employed in the building trades are generally dissatisfied with the award and meetings have been called to review the position. •Similar dissatisfaction exists in Melbourne, where a strike is talked of.
