CANTEEN SCANDAL
CASE CONCLUDED ACCUSED PLEAD GUILTY SENTENCE DEFERRED. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.-Copyright.) (Received May 23, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 22nd May. The trial of the accused persons in connection with the Army canteen contracts scandals— in which six quartermasters, two sergeants, a major, and eight civilians are charged that in February, 1903, and on other occasions they conspired that money Bhould corruptly be given as an inducement to favour Lipton's contracts— has concluded at the Old Bailey. Owing to the Judge ruling that defendanU were agents of the Crown they all, following their counsel's advice, pleaded .guilty. Sentence was deferred. [The accused persons are :— Hon. Major and Quartermaster F. Walker, Guards' Depot; the Hon. Captain and Quartermaster J. Fowles, Ist Battalion Irish Guards; the Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster G. R. Burton, 4th Hussars; the Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster T. Potter, 3rd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders; the Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster W. J. Armstrong, Ist Battalion Norfolk Regiment.]
