PETONE'S ROUGH EXPERIENCE. The steamer Petone, which left Picton on Sunday morning last for Gfsbdrnc, had a particularly rough trip, and in Captain Cowan's opinion it was as tough a south-easterly as ho had experienced in sixteen years about New Zealand. The voyage from Picton to Cape Palliser occupied some 20 hours, during which very heavy weather was experienced and wild and adverse seas were met With. She found the remainder of the trip almost equally as rough. Portland Island was picked up at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, and the sea at that part was in a turbulent state. At tho Bull Rock, near the Island, the sea wa§ striking the rocks with terrific force and shooting its spray high in the air, high above the level of the Petone's mast/ The wind was south-easterly as far as the Kidnappers, and from then on the Petone met with ai\ easterly i-01l of exceptional severity. As she approached the bay it was .found that the storm was even worse than further down. Captain Cowan stated that there was flood water right outside the bay, and that the sea was breaking in eight fathoms of water. He made towards Nick's Head, rml found that it was impossible to drop anchor there, as the sea was breaking for more than a mile from shore. Some heavy seas caused the steamer to pitch heavily, and" the atinobpheru was equally troublesome, being thick and impenetrable, so that the matter of making the entrance had ,to be carefully undertaken. On getting just inside the extended breakwater, a heavy swell caught the Petone's bow and sent her towards the- wall, but she managed to escape bumping, nnd negotiated tliu river successfully on Tuesday afternoon.
