THE NEW BUILDING. A CONTRACT LET. The tender of Mr. A. E. Hurrell, at £10,980, has been*accepted for the erection of the new brick building in Tas* man-street for the Boys' Institute. Tho amount of the contract is just £20 less than the directors had allocated for tho work. The trustees of Mrs. S. A. Rhodes's estate have agreed to donate the sum of £3000, leaving the executive of the Institute to finance the balance (£8000). The new building will be known as the Wellington^ Boys' 'Institute and the- S. A. Rhodes Home for Boys, as a tribute to the memory of the late Mrs. S. A. Rhodes, who was such a generous friend to the Institute. The unsuccessful tenderers were :— W. PI. Bennett, £11,607; Muir and Rose, £11,714 ; Hunt and M'Doiiald, £11,870; Watts Bros., £12,067 5 Murdoch and Wallis, £12,524; \V. L. Thompson, £12,630 j Mace and Nicholson, £12,795 ; Howie and Matthews, £13,333,- M'Lean and Gray, £13,448. Th© plans were prepared by Mr. W. Gray Young, architect. The building is to be a five-story steol-frame structure, with a frontage of 40ft to Teaman-street, and a depth of 178 ft. A considerable portion ot the around floor is taken up by; a swimming bath—lOOf t by 30ft. Adjoining this there are shower baths and dressing rooms. As it is intended to hold swimming carnivals in the baths, galleries are to be constructed at each end which will accommodate several hundrort people. There ia a meeting hall,/ Horary, and gymnasium on the first floor 1 . The dining room and kitchen are on the second floor, the two upper floors consisting of clasß rooms and bedrooms. The front elevation is in tho English renaissance style, and is to be built with pressed brickwork, relieved with cement cornice and balcony. The contract is to be completed in twelve months.
