NOTABLE FUNCTION
MAORI AND PAKEHA VETERANS. <ir TJIKURAPH— SPMIAL TO THB POST.) AUCKLAND, This Day. The ceremony in connection with the unveiling of the Orakau Memorial was in every way a notable function, and the attendance and enthusiasm were well up to the anticipations of the promoters. An interesbing sighb was the presence of nearly 20 Maori and pakeha veterans, who were present at the storming of Orakau 50 years ago. There were six of the Maori defenders of the famous redoubt present, their names and ages being as follow:— To Wairoa Piripi (90), Wliarerangi Parekawa (88), Hikira te Rangi (84), Matu Muunu (80), Poupatata Huihi (70), and Te Huia Raureti (about 70). The prevailing tone of the speecheseleven in number-— was one of rejoicing at the amity now existing between the two races. A large mimber of Auckland veterans and other visitors were present.
