PART REMITTED RATES ON SPORTS GROUNDS.

FINANCE COMMITTEE FAVOURABLE. One of the most persistent demands the City Council has had to face in recent years is the application of sports bodies for remission of rates on their grounds. Deputation after deputatiun has waited on the council, and urged the case with skill and vigour, and on two occasions Mr. 0. P. Skerrett, K.C., as representing the Sports Protection League, has spoken cogently on behalf of the sports bodies. Hitherto the request has not been favourably received, but it^ is understood that the Finance Committee, in recognition of the arguments for remission, has recommended the councit to grant a certain degree of easement of rates to sports bodies under . certain conditions, The question will J come before the City Council to-night, it J is understood, in- the shape of a recewn- j mendation of the Finance Committee to remit the general rate only on sports ■ grounds. The condition of this conces- I sion is that the larger private ground' -—the Athletic, Park and the Association Football Ground at Kilbirnie — are to be open to the public except when actually being used by their owners, the Wellington Rugby Union and the Wellington Football Association. The tennis courts and bowling greens are to be open to the public as spectators, but uofc for play, on ail occasions when plaj is taking place. The amount of ra.tes to be remitted is slightly over £300. This total is made up as follows :-• £ £ d Wellington Rugby Union ... 135 8 4 Thorndon Bowling Club ... 33 12 10 Wellington 80.-A-'ii«g JJtub „. 39 0 4 Victoria Bowling Club ... 12 1? 4 Newtown Howling Club ... i) ;^' 2 Wellington Tennis Club ... 10 Jb 10 Thorndon Tennis Club „. 12 14 2 Newtown Tennis Club ... 014 6 Association Football < Grounds.
