THE WHARF FATALITY AN APPEAL.
TO THE KDITOIt. Sir,— The executive of the Wharf Labourers' Union desires to draw your attention to the sad circumstances connected with the death of Thomas Caldwell, who was killed in the hold of the Maitai this morning' while working cargo. Deceased, who was a married man, leaves a wife and six young children totally unprovided for, and had only recently restarted work after being laid aside for nine weeks owing to an accident he met with on 9th January. He was an excellent worker and was popular on the wharves, and the executive feels certain i.hat any monetary assistance that might be forthcoming from anyone who felt disposed to help would be deeply appreciated by his bereaved ones. Probably compensation will bo forthcoming in the usual way later, but a little assistance at the present juncture would help to tide, over the time which must .necessarily eventuate before the legal formalities are complied with. The executive would deem it a favour if you could see your way to open a list to receive and acknowledge any contributions that might be sent in.— l am, etc., N F. RADCLIFFE, President, for the Executive. [We shall be pleased to acknowledge all subscriptions sent in.]
