MATERNITY HOME FOR FALLEN SISTERHOOD
OPENED THIS AFTERNOON. SALVATION ARMY'S WORK. The excellent work which the Salvation Army is doing in uplifting the fallen was further forwarded this afternoon, when tho Army's new maternity home in Kensington-street was officially opened. The institution is intended solely for the care and nurturing of the fallen sisterhood, whom the Army is endeavouring after first lapses to restore into respectable society, and to give them a chance of living wholesome lives. Although it is not generally known, the Army has been carrying on this work among fallen girls for the past fourteen years, and during that time has put several hundred cases through its hands. These cases have all been dealt with at the old maturnity home in Thompsonstreet, which was able to accommodate 21 patients. With the growth of population during recent yeais, and the proportionate increased demands upon the institution, the Thompson-street home pioved to be too small, besides which tho building and site were unsuitable for the purpose for which the home was intended. The present property in Ken-sington-street was accordingly purchased, and tradesmen were put to work to convert the premises into an up-to-date maternity hospital. This has been done, and those who visited the premises this afternoon were much impressed with the conveniences provided and the healthiness of the site. t The new institution is a two-storey structure, with a capacity for 26 patients. Last year 50 patients were put through the old home in Thompson-street, and it is expected that more cases will be dealt with this year, it being the Army's policy never to refuse admission to a patient so long as there is a room available. The official opening this afternoon was performed by the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke). Otheres who were to speak wel'c Commissioner Richards, Dr. A. K. Newman, and Dr. Platt-Mills.
