MAYOR APPEALS TO THE PUBLIC

The Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) is appealing to the public on behalf of the sufferers by the tragic explosion at Upper Hutt. He is calling a public meeting for next Monday evening. Mr. Luke holds that it is necessary to hold a public meeting in the evening in order that all classes may have an opportunity of joining in a community of interest to further the movement for relief. "I hope," said the Mayor to-day, "that those who are organising other subscription lists will attend the meeting, so that we may all bo able to work together in the good ca.use. At the meeting on Monday night 1 would like to hear a full discussion on suitable methods for dispensing any funds that may bo raised. 1 ask, therefore, for the co-operation of all concerned." Jupp's Brass Band will give a performance at Newtown Park next Sunday in aid of the wives and families uf those who suffered through the Upper Hutt disaster. References to the Hutt disaster wero made afc meetings of the Wellington Tramway Employees' Union on Monday night and Tuesday morning. The following resolution was pa-seed : — "That the members of the Wellington Tramway Employees , Union express deep regret at the loss of po many valuable citizens who met their deaths whilst \aliautly endeavouring to save the "property of their fellow-townsmen, and tender to the sorrowing relatives their heartfelt sympathy in their sudden and sad bereave(nent." The executive was instructed to forthwith issue subscription lists among the members of the union for tho relief of the victims' dependents.
