PETONE GASWORKS

SHOULD THEY, BE REMOVED? Is it desirable that the Pet One Gasworks should be removed from the present site? This question engaged the attention of Petone councillors last evening when Councillor Anderson moved as follows: — "That the gas manager be instructed to report upon the following matters: — (1) Whether it would be advantageous to remove the gaeworks from Udy-street, to the council's property at the Sandhills. (2) The cost of same, together with all incidental costs such as increased trunk mains, etc. (3) What saving, if any, could be effected by such removal, and in what direction. (4) \vnat would be the effect, upon the cost price per 1000 c.f. of 'gas', it the proposal were given effect to," Speaking in support of the motion Councillor Anderson said that it was his desire that the Petono wharf should be made a railway one. When they assured the Harbour Board that from 2500 to 3000 tons of coal wa3 used annually at the gasworks, the freight on which would amount to about £500, the board would see that a railway wharf was necessary. He was also of the opinion that, a.t some future date, the bays on the eastern side of the harbour could be more easily supplied. _ After a brief discussion, it was decided on the motion of Councillor Townsend tfiat clauses 2, 3, and 4 of Councillor Anderson's motion be deleted and No. 1 agreed to.
