FIFE AND DRUM BANDS

MOVEMENT IN WELLINGTON. A movement, which will doubtless receive a good deal of public support, is now afoot to form as many boys' drum and fife bands as possible within We]liugton city and suburbs. At present there are only two bands of this* description in Wellington— the Boys' Institute Band, w,hich was formed after the Car* nival of last yeai 1 , and the Berhampore band, and the promoters state that the movement only needs a little encouragement for at least a dozen of these juvenile bands to be formed locally. The ball was set rolling in this direction last week by Mr, T. Vivian, of Auckland, organising secretary of the New Zealand Juvenile Musical Association, who paid a special visit to Wellington for this purpose. Mr. Vivian waited upon a number of representative people, and pointed out the excellent results which were being achieved elsewhere. He stated that at the present time there were no fewer than 1000 boys under his association in Auckland, while in Dunedin there were as many as eleven boys' fife and drum bands, and in Christchurch a number of leading men. notably schoolmasters, were giving the movement their support. The associa* tiou, which has its headquarters in Auckland, has now taken up the \vork of giving t special musical training to girls, having formed special clubs for that purpose. In order to demonstrate \vha4i the Auckland people are doing in this direction, and to help the movement along in other centres, Mr. Vivian informed the Wellington people he ai> proached that upon his return to Auckland he would endeavour to arrange for two of the Auckland fife and drum bands to tour New Zealand, one coming down one coast* and the second one down the other. Mr. D. M'Lareii, who interested himself largely in the formation of the Bcrhampore band, has, at Mr. Vivian's request, agVeed to promote the formation of further boys' fife and drum bands throughout the city and suburbs, and has seen a number of gentlemen with a view to forming committees to achieve this result.
