VARSITY BOAT RACE EASY WIN FOR CAMBRIDGE

IMPROMPTU STAND COLLAPSES. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) LONDON, 29th March. The seventy-first Oxford and Cambridge University boat race ended in an easy win for Cambridge by four lengths and a-half. There was perfect weather. During the race an impromptu stand on a barge at Hammersmith collapsed. One hundred persons were thrown from the barge. Fourteen seriously fractured their limbs, and seven were sent to hospital. Cambridge chose the Surrey side, and, rowing admirably, forged ahead from the start. They had two lengths' lead at Harrod's. Oxford gamely, but ineffectually, struggled to reduce the lead, and Cambridge easily held them. The race was a procession from Hammersmith, despite Oxford's spurts. Several Oxonians were distressed. Cambridge paddled homo by four lengths and a-half. The time was 20min 23sec. The winners since 1900 arc : — Time.
