A' member of the Poplar BorougK Council, after a discussion whether to let halls to .Suffragettes, moved — " That the question be now put." • Suffragettes shouted "Cowards!" and! hurled scores of stinkpots, bags of flour, and other missiles from the gallery. The women broke down the barrier and engaged in a hand-to-hand conflict with the councillors, attempting to use the chairs as weapons. Some flourished)' life-preservers. The police were called, but refused to enter on the ground that they were in? insufficient strength. The majority of the councillors them returned to the chamber, and the disturbance was quelled, but business was impossible. MANSION IN IRELAND BURNED. SUFFRAGETTES SUSPECTET (Received March 28, 9.10 a.m.) LONDON, 27th March. Major-General Sir Hugh M'Calmoutv's mansion at Abbeylands (County Antrim) has been burned. The damage is estimated at £15,000. Suffragettes are suspected. The grounds were recently used as SI drill ground for Ulster volunteers.
