April 23 and 25.— Welliagton R.C. I Autumn- | April '29 and 30.— Manawatu R.C. Autumn. May 6 and 7— Marlborough R.C. I Autumn. ' May 6- ard 7.— Harris Bay, J.C. Autumn. NOTES AND COMMENTS (By' Sir Bedivere). Dearest is said to have shown quite encouraging form over five furlongs on the eve of the Rangitikei Meeting, but she shaped most disappointingly on the day, and it is doubtful whether she will ever do any good again oh the Turf. As a blood mare, however, she should prove invaluable. Rill was nothing like herself this week, and it is any odds against her being sent North to contest the Brighton Hurdles at Ellerslie. With the exception of The Rover, and possibly Aruake, and the defunct Marblehead, the jumpers seen out recently are of a very poor class. A really smart hurdler could carry almost any weight and win this season. Lubriline is one, of the smartest hacks now in commission, and should be quite capable of holding her own in open company later ' on. She ia by Vladimir, another of whose daughters in the diminutive , Vladineau led for more than half-way in the Rangitikei Cup. A Souths Island sportsman who was present at Bulls this week commented on the excellence of the luncheon provided. "But," said he, "you ought to have been down at . We had a kinematograph lunch there." "What do you mean by that ? someone enquired To which the reply was, "Wei], everything was moving !" Papamarama, who won easily in the opening ,day of the Rangitikei Meeting, is an excellent jumper. It is reported that he has changed hands, delivery to be taken after the Masterton Meeting. Through some unknown cause Kilrain recently slipped his patella. Mr. Crossley, M.R.C.V.S., was called in and had some difficulty in replacing the bone in its proper position. The Wellington Cup winner is now progressing favourably, however,' and is also making a good recovery from his attack of strangles. He is being led out at exercise daily. One very rarely hears of a thoroughbred meeting with a similar mishap., but in 1896 I saw an extraordinary accident, through which :i mare called Queen of Sheba. was belie /ed to have supped the. cap of the near stifle and got it back again inside half a minute. The incident occurred during the progress of a steeplechase at Rosehill. In running off at the log fence she struck the wing, dislodging her rider. She went on, galloping on three legs, for fully half a furlong, her near hind leg being carried just as one would expect to see it when the patella had been displaced. Suddenly, however, the bone must have slipped back again, as she put her fourth foot to the ground, and apparently moved as well as ever. How she fared subsequently I never heard. Birkline is v i# v a" class" by himself as compared to the remainder of the horses engaged in the Feilding Cup, and even under 9st 71b he will be hard to beat if he sees the post. Fair Rosamond, 7st 111b, ran well, at Napier Park, however, and must have an excellent chance. Moutoa Girl has 41b less to carry than she had in the Rangitikei Cup, and she 1 , too, may be regaided as dangerous. Play Off, 7st 91b, reads well in the JMangaone Stakes. • G. Price returned to Awapuni from Auckland on Tuesday last. He went North to have a look at Bronze's four-year-old own brother Battle Abbey,/ of whom he has secured a lease, with a purchasing clause, on account of " Mr, Highden " Battle Abbey suffers from a weak knee, and it has been found impossible to train him at Ellerslie. It is thought, however, that the tracks at Awapuni will suit him, and that there is a fair prospect of his standing & preparation. The meeting between Beragoon and Radnor in the A.JTC. St. Leger is being keenly looked forward to by Australian sportsmen. Beragoon has earned £11,720 and Radnor's winnings have amounted to £10.149 15s. Andelosia comes next with a credit balance of £5983 10s. A new regulation has recently been pist into force by the A. J.C. which promises to bear good results. Complaints had been made to the effect that many licensed jockeys failed to attend at the training tracks during the early mornings for the purpose of riding work. Those who now do so have to sign a book, and in the fear that the record so kept might prejudice their prospect of obtaining a license next season riders have been turning up at Randwick with greater regularity. It is said that the A. J.C. intends debarring geldings from competing for the St. Leger as well as the Derby. This move does not find favour in all quarters, for it is argued that breeders will thereby be given an additional incentive to keep their colts entire, with the result that the country will become overrun by stallions of inferior class. Expect is galloping well at Awapuni, and is a certain starter for the Great Easter Handicap. "Mr. Highden" will also be represented at Riccarton by Bronze and Pariform, the latter of whom has been moving attractively. Their trainer has been busy this week breaking in two or three yearlings.
