"THE SAINT OF HOXTON."

Father Kelly, "the Saint of Hoxton," who died recently at the post of duty, was one of the most splendid figures of our slums. He lived in Hoxton, one of the poorest and most criminal parts of London. There are streets in Hoxton that are still to-day the centre of crime. There are other streets, homes of .poverty so tragic that they defy description. Here Father Kelly spent his life, year by year, from the prime of manhood till he

reached 81, always at the call of the poor, day and night. On the way to baptise ft child he tripped over a tramway line and fell at the corner of a ' street — the road being up at the spot for a tramway construction — broke a rib, and died a few hours afterwards in great pain. The scene in the poor square where he made his home on the flay of the great service in his honour was the man's finest tribute. Great crowds' had come of all kinds. There were numbers of priests fioni all parts of London, the Cardfhal Archbishop of Westminster leading the service. "In the street," says the Daily Mail, "outside, multitudes wjio could not obtain admission stood and waited in the slush of East London, arid many of ' them knelt down in the roadway to take their share in the last rites for the saint who had gone."
