THAT LIGHT AREA TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — By the courtesy of the Mayor I have received a copy of the records in this matter that has been prepared for ' the information of councillors. A reference to it shows that my firm's application for the right-of-way was made on 14th December, • 1906, and it came before the committee at its meetings on " 15th !May (consideration • postponed), 22nd Augud (consideration postponed), and 7th October, 1907 (light area agreed to). Councillor Hindmarsh was not present at eithc-r the meeting of 22nd August or 7th October, and yet he has the audacity to charge thg, chairman of the committee, Councillor Godber, with having suppressed Mr. M'Coll's report, which was dated 22nd May, 1907, forwarded by Mr. Richardson on same day to the -Towni Clerk, and referred by him to the committee. Perhaps Councillor Hindmarsh will try and explain how he came to know, five years after the event, that the report in question was not submitted to the committee, the meetings (if which" he faiTed to attend. Perhaps he will also explain why he has not mentioned that Mr. Morton reported on 16th May, 1907 : "I am inclined to think that such a right-of-way would be of benefit to the council's works." There can, of course, be no questipn that the ordinary procedure was followed. Mr. Morton's and Mr. R'.chardson's reports, the latter covering that of Mr. M'Coll, must have been read to the committee, who were so far influenced by them that they eventually cut down my application from a right-of-way to a j light area. — I am, etc., ! G. SSIETCLIFFE. 26th March. j
