There was a large attendance on the second day of the match, Australia v. Manawatu. A strong wind was blowing. Cody and Collins were the opening batsman, and Greer opened the bowling, six being got off his first over, but a little later the same bowler got Cody with a good-length ball. Dolling was next, and Collins presently hit Greer for four to the on, bringing 20 up. Dol.ling went out to Ongley and missed, but Cornish lost the oportunity to stump him. ' In his next over, however, Ongley bowled" the .South Australian. M'Kenzje came in, and 40 was soon up. M'Kenzie then got two fours off Greer to the •off, and, with some smartly-run singles, /60 went up, 70 soon following. Elliott wont on in Greer's place at the top end, x .and Collins got three off his first delivery. With 80 up M'Kenzie was bowled by Ongley with a loose one, wilich he tried to hook, but missed. The total was then 96. Waddy, the next man, soon got going, and 100' was reached. The scoring -was now 'very fast, smartly-run singles and fours being the features. Bartlett was given a trial with the ball in -place of Ongley, and G. Greer presently caught Waddy, who had never been comfortable. Trumper had a great reception as'he came out to >bat, this being his first appearance here. Cornish was not "taking" Bartlett very well, and he missed two which ! went for byes. Then Bartlett beat Collins, but Cornish missed stamping him, and Elliott badly missed Collins at longon. One hundred and ninety was not, i long in coming, and at that stage Elliott was given a trial in place of Bartlett, and caught Collins off his own bowling in his first over. Collins made his runs by fine cricket. Armstrong followed, and 200 went up. At 220 Brennand was put on in Elliott's place, and M'Vicar replaced Greer against the. wind, his first delivery being hit for four by Armstrong. Then Allingham just missed catching Trumper. The batsmen were now wi-ll set, and the score mounted rapidly. Trumper at length gave a chuuee, a.nd Luxford made n good catch at fine-leg. The Sydney man had played a splendid innings. Crawford came in, and Bartlett was given another chance with the wind. Three hundred wpre soon registeied, and ut 310 Allingham was put on agnintt the wind, and Hoddor at the other end. With the score i>l» 320 Crawford should haVe been run out, but the wicket-keeper badly missed the ball. Greer now went on against | the wind, and bowled Crawford. Armstrong was, 6B tit the tea adjournment, and resumed with M'Gregor. Soon after restarting Greer beautifully caught and bowled M'Cregoi. Ongley, Armstrong reached his century, bringing 410 up. Four hundred and forty soon went up, tho fielding now being very slack. When the score was 450 the partnership had put on 100 runs. At 460 Brennand and Luxford were put on, and M'Lean caught Armstrong at long-off with the score at 484. The 1 batsman received an ovation. Layer was the last man, and the fielding was now going from bad to worse. Five hundred went up, and some time after Luxford cleaned bowled Mailey. Scores :—: —
