CENTRAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING OF COUNCIL
A meeting of the Council of the Wellington Central Chamber of Commeice was held yesterday, Mr, C. M. LuVo (president) in the chair. Present : Messrs. A. Leigh Hunt, Thomas Bush, J. -F. Atkins, William Smith, Geotge Winder, and Robeit Hall. A letter was received from the Piinie Minister, stating that the passed by the Chamber, urging that a Tirtde Commissioner be sent to the West Coast of South America for the purpose of^ reporting on the prospects of developing an export trade from New Zealand, would receive his careful consideration. The Minister of Railways wrotp, stating that the letter of the Chamber drawing attention to certain phases of the railway service had. been noted, and would receive consideration. The secretary reported that he had interviewed the Union Company with reference to obtaining copies of the company's tariff, and had been informed that a copy' could not be supplied, but the company would be glad to give information in respect to any particular items. Mr. W. Smith said he did not undeistand any reason "for secrecy with respect to the tariff. Ho mentioned several apparent anomalies, amongst them being higher charges on certain articles between Wellington and Picton and Wellington and Nelson than the freights on the ' same articles between London and Wellington. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. G. Winder, the matter was referred back, so that, if thought desirable:, it could be brought up again at the next mohthly _ meeting. A letter was received from the American Tk-ade Commission, representing the National Association of Manufacturers of the United States, agreeing to address a, meeting of the members of the Chamber on the objects of the Commission. It agreed that the chairman and secretary confer with the Commissioners, and arrange the time and place of the meeting.
