(II TKMORAPH.— SrKCIAL TO TM POST.) MASTERTON, This Day. Heavy rain fell here yesterday, and continued throughout the evening. The Masterton Fire Board has decided to purchase, an up-to-date , motor fire engine, and a sub-committee has been set up to make final arrangements in the matter. The Masterton Golf Club, whose season was opened to-day, has a membership of 159. The club is in a sound financial position, the treastuer's report at the a-nnual meeting this week showing a credit balance of £29 19s lOd. Tho receipts during last sea-son totalled £326 6s 2d, and the expenditure £296 6s 4d. A number of important improvements were effected in the club's Jinks at Lansdowne during the past year. T. Pinkney, employed by Messrs. Fly and Young, carriers, was rather badly injured on Thursday evening as the lesult of a horse, which he was driving, bolting. Pinkney received a number of bad bruiser, but is now progressing satisfactorily. Mr. "V. N. Richards, of the G.P.O. staff, was last evening presented with a handsome dining-room clock by fellowofficials, to mark the occasion of his approaching marriage. Mr. S. Cummnigs made the presentation, and, with Messrs. Moore, Price and Jackson, senior officers, spoke in high terms of Mr. "Richards's capacity as a postal official. Mr. Richards replied. % \ A motor-bus company, with a capital of £3000, has been registered here, and operations will be commenced within a few weeks. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Chamber 6f Commerce was held yesterda.y afternoon, there being present Messrs. J. B. Keith (chairman), J. Ca«elberg, W. B. Channells, E. P. Mountfort, J. Milne, A. Henderson, G. 11. Perry, D. M. Graham, and R. Brown. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. C. E. Daniel. W. B. Carrick, 11. H. Donald, D. K. Logan, G. W. Seller, A.' T. Spain, and E. H. Waddington. The treasurer reported a etedit balance of £31 3s 3d. A communication was received from the Wellington Central Chamber of Commerce drawing attention to a resolution passed by that body relative to the necessity for revising the railway tariff, and with a view to removing existing anomalies, and asking the co-operation of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce in impressing upon the Minister of Railways the desirability of adopting the chamber iccommendalion. After considerable discussion, it was resolved to 6et up a committee, consisting of Messrs. 11. H. Donald, G. C. Summerell, and C. E. Daniel, to deal with the matter. The Wellington Farmers' Meat Company wrote, asking the assistance of the chamber in securing a copy of the report drawn i p borne time ago in reference to the havnefesing of the Ruamahanga and Waingawa Rivers for the purpose of establishing » feystem of electricity, and adding that if a practical scheme were evolved the company would be a large user of electric power. It waa decided that Messrs. Milne and Mountfort be appointed, a committee, with a view to gaining the desired information from th© Minister of Internal Affairs. Messrs. H. H. Donald and G. Milne, the sub-committee set up to go into the question of a New Zealand court at the Panama Exposition, reported that they could not yet bring forward any suggestion. They, however, agreed that a central committee should be established in Wellington, with advisory committees in other centres, adding that they presumed the central committee at Wellington would attend to all business in the Wellington Province, as well as in the City of Wellington. The General Manager of Railways (Mr. E. H. Hiley) wrote in reference to the complaints 'made by the chamber that the railway j service in the Wairarapa, especially on the days of' Trentham races, was nob satisfactory, and stated that the arrangements at present in force were decided upon only after mature consideration. The meeting decided to communicate with Mr. Hiley, and 1 suggest that the morning train from Masterton, on the days of summer and autumn meetings at Trentham leave at 6.30 a.m., and on the days of the winter meeting at 8.30 a.m.. and lhat ti.ese trains be made excursion through lo Wellington instead of to Trenlham only, as at present.
