MAGISTRATES COURT

To-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court was presided over by Mr. D. G. A: Cooper, S.M. For drunkenness. Alexander Harrison was fined 10s, with the alternative of 43 hours' imprisonment, and Peter Mulcahy was lined £1, penalty for default being, fixed at seven days' incarceration. John Hyde, a prohibited person, was fined £1, with the option of fourteen days' imprisonment. Enrico Monetti, a native of Italy, denied having assaulted William Henry Trengrove, a motor expert. Complainant's story was that tho defendant had broken a window in a motor-car belonging to him. The previous day, when witiiess went to collect the amount (10s 6d) of the damage, the accused offered to pay 6s, then Bs, then 9s, and finally placed 10s in complainant's hand, at the same time striking him on the face. The defence was that the accused was gesticulating and one of his hands accidentally struck complaint, Ernest William Trengrove, son of complainant, swore that he saw defendant strike his father with his clenched fist. The Magistrate convicted defendant and fined him 10s, with costs.
