DEVASTATION IN RUSSIA SETTLEMENT SWEPT AWAY

There were nearly 3200 victims. A fishing settlement of 400 houses was swept away. • Fears are entertained for the safety of the Astrakhan fishing fleets, whose crews number 10,000. A striking phenomenon was presented by the complete darkness which prevailed in' the area affected, where elsewhere there was a rosy sky. Mud and rain disfigured the houses, while frost is ruining the orchards. There was also blinding Uglrtning without thunder, and the peasants in the stricken area believed that the unusual conditions were a prelude to the Judgment Day.
