Superintendent Keily.officei- in charg* of tho Auckland Polk*' District, say* there is not -an atom of evidenc© to support tho statement made by Mrs. FioM at the annual meeting of the W.C.T.U., that an organised system is at work im this country for the recruiting of 'girls to the under- world. Referring to par» ticular instances quoted by Mrs. Field, tho Superintendent said a few cases to which a certain amount of suspicion waa attached had been reported to the police but m none of them has there been an atom of evidence to show tho existence of white sßivery. Superintendent Keily added j "I can. say without hesitation that, co far as Auckland is concerned, there ia not a vestige of truth in the assertion. 1 can also say with almost as much confidence that white slavery is unknown in New Zealand."
