MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. W. G. Riddell, who presided' at the Magistrate^ Court to-day, dealt leniently with three first offenders for drunkenness. The Inspector of Awards (R. T. Bailey) proceeded against the Barraud Company for failing to close their chemist's shop in Moleswortli-Bfcreefc at 8 p.m. on the 22nd January. Mr. Cohen, the occupier of the premises, who was away in Dunedin. pleaded guilty, stating that the man left iv charge had been misled by a notice from tho secretary of tho Pharmaceutical Society about the hours for closing on holidays. Defendant was ordered to pay 7s, costs of court. R. D. Hanion and Andrew Dunbar Sloane, chemists, on Bimila.r charges, were also ordered to pay 7s, costs of court, the defondants having been away from the city when tho breach of the agreement occurred. Mr. F. M. Luckio pleaded guilty on behalf of defondant, who stated that his client waa unaware that she had to' givo notice to tho Inspector. Tho Bench ordered defendant to pay court costs in each case. , Margaret O'Neill, hotolkeeper, for permitting three of her employees to work in excess of ten hours per day without notifying the Inspector, was fined 5s and 7s costs. Inspector Doyle proceeded against Charles Betbell, for permitting horses to wander on Main-road, Mornington. Bethell waa fined ss, und 7s costs. Jamea Flanagan, for allowing a cow to ,be at large in Wright-street, was fined sb, and 7s costs. William Standen, for permitting a cow to bo at large on Main-road, Mornington, was ordorca to pay 7s, costs of Court. Patrick Shivnan, for permitting a horse to wander at Orangi Kaupapa road, Northland, was ordered to pay 9s, co3ts of Court. George Smith, tor permitting a horse to ■wander in Karepa-road, was fined ss, and 7s costs. George Hayden, w^io' was charged with leaving a lorry in Victoria-street, was fined Is, but no costs were allowed. Frank Richard Preice, for smoking in an auction mart in Allen-street wherefoodstuffs wero exposed for sale, was let oft' on payment of 7s costs of Court. j William Fogden, for permitting horses to wander in Buckley-street, was fined ss, und 7s costs. Sing Kee and Co., for failing to close their shop at 1 p.m. on the half-holiday, wore fined ss, and 7s costs. Yeo Wah and Co., for selling cigarettes and tobacco after 8 p.m., when tobacconists are required to close, was fined 5s and 7s coats. Young How Bros., for a similar offence, were mulcted in a similar penalty. Michael Kember, who pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the sum of £2 from Henry Arthur Bruce, and failing to account for same to William Hedges, waa fined . £2. and ordered to refund the money ; in default seven days' imprisonment
