CRIMINAL SESSIONS

AUCKLAND, 19th February. At the Supreme Court to-day, Albert Edward M'Queen and Harry Wilson, two prisoners who are serving long terms of imprisonment at Mount Eden Gaol, were found guilty of assaulting Warder Anderson and Alfred Froasken, causing actual bodily harm, and also attempting to escape from gaol. Sentence was deferred. Frank Etnest Watling, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of forging the name of his employer to a cheque for £3, came up for sentence. It was stated that his employer had reposed sufficient confidence in him to go bondsman, and to offer to employ him in future. Prisoner was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. A young man named Thomas Ward was acquitted on a charge of theft of a watch and gladstone bag, the property of N. B. Lusk, at Te Kuiti in February, 1912. Charles Palmer pleaded not guilty to a charge of false pretenqes. It was alleged that he represented himself as a member of a wellknown Auckland family, and induced a tailor to cash a valueless cheque for him, He claimed that he could prove an alibi, and the case was adjourned to give him an opportunity to do so. Walter Kenny, for burglary, was sentenced to three years' reformative treatment. TIMARU ITEMS TIMARU, 19th February. The garden fete in aid of the fund for improving the park netted £416. At a public meeting last night it was decided to invite the Fire Brigades' Association to hold the 1915 demonstrations at Timaru. The Regimental Band is to be given a complimentary banquet next Thursday.
