■<» GENERAL BUSINESS At tho fortnightly meeting of the City Council last evening there were present: The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), Councillors R. Fletcher, J. E. Fitzgerald, A. H. Hindmarsh, R. A. Wright. T. C. A. Hislop, M. F. Luckie, E. Tregear, J. Fuller, L. M'Kenzie, W. J. Thompson, H. Buddie, J. Godber, and W. H. P. Barber. The request of a property-owner at Salamanca-road for the construction of a retaining wall has not been acceded to. Three ratepayers are to be granted loans on the deferred payment system, in order to /carry out drainage works. The recommendation of the Legislation Committee that the usual commission be paid to agents procuring tena-uts for corporation properties Has been adopted. Permission has been given fov official information to be included in the Pilot Guide, about to be published, subject to the ( details being approved by the Officers. The request of Mr. Hayward to sell a portion of land reclaimed from the sea at Houghton Bay has been refused, and Mr. Hayward is to be informed that the council claim the area of land as its property. The Mayor explained that the council purchased a piece of land from Mr. Hayward, and to that land there had been an accretion, which Mr. Hayward had claimed. The use of the Conceit Hall for free lectures has been granted to the manager of the American athletes, Dr. Barrett and Dr. Truby King, on dates to be arranged. A report has been furnished by the City Solicitor with respect to encroachments at the southern end of Willis-street. The District Land Registrar is calling in the titles for amendment. A proposal for subdivision of land" and erection of buildings at Onepu-road, Kilbirnie, has not been approved. t Permission to erect an illuminated sign in the position suggested over a verandah in Manners-street was refused, but consent, was given on the condition that the sign is placed parallel to the building and not end on as proposed. Authority has been given to the Firo Brigade superintendent to provide for a fire brigade display at the forthcoming Citizens' Carnival, subject to his being able to arrange the same without materially interfering with the protection of the city. Oh a. recommendation by the Legislation and Reclaimed Land Leases Committee it was resolved that authority be given to the committee to make an offer for a yearly tendJncy of section 118, Lambton Reclamation. That, the ofiev of Messrs. Bethune and Company with respect to section 83j Lambton Reclamation, be declined. That property in Brandon-street, formerly occupied by Messrs. Danks and Sons, be placed in tho hands of agents at the upset rental. Owing to special circumstances, no further action is to be taken with respect to the changing of tho name of Barnaixl-street (formeily Princes-street), Wadestown. Property owners at Hohiria-road, Hataitai, hav-c been granted permission to enclose portion of the road reservation on the conditions already approved by the council.
