MESSAGE FROM THE SEA
A true Christmae story by Canon Hannay ("George A. Birmingham"), is published by the Irish Times. Early last year a, rich American returned with, his littlo daughter from Europe. In mid-ocean the littlo girl*wrote her name and address on a piece of paper, put it, in a bottle, and dropped the bottlo into tho sea>. Canon Hannay, when in New Yorkj was eeon by a representative of the rich American, who asked for his help in the following circumstances:-— The littlo girl's message had been picked up by a peasant on tho west coast of Ireland, who had sent her a letter stating that, ho was a very poor man with a large family, and asking for help. Canon Hannay was requested to use his local knowledge for tho purpose of verifying this story. Ho sent at telegram to a friend in Bclmullet, and received a satisfactory answer. Tho poverty of tho O'Flahcrtys, he remarks, was, if anything, understated in tho letter. As a result, a, substantial Christmas gift of money has been sent to the peasant by tho father of tho littlo girl who dropped tho bottle in mid- Atlantic.
