The wharf labourers only worked ordinary hours on Saturday. This resuited in chaos. The steamer Willochra left a quantity of untendered cargo on the wharf, and other steamers are either delayed or have sailed without portions of their cargoes. ' It is understood that this direct action 19 'the result of the failure of the Melbourne conference to effect a settlement. " The men are demanding 2s an hour for- ordinary time, and 3s an hour 'overtime, instead of Is 6d and 2s 3d, respectively. ' Mr. W. M. Hughes says he does not believe the men's action in declining to •work overtime represents any deliberate intention on the part of the Sydney branch of the Federation ; presumably, a small section of extremists precipitated ihe trouble. ' The Daily Telegraph understands that the New South Wales branch of the Federation of Labour has been officially approached by the Workers' Union with ' a view to having the embargo on " black " wheat extended by unions governed by the Federation. If this is agreed to wheat will be; blocked on certain railway lines.
