Four first offenders were convicted for drunkenness by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., on Saturday. Thos.Shea.han (four previous convictions), who was similarly charged, was fined 40s, with the option of seven days' -imprisonment, and made the subject of a prohibition order. Thomas Newton Withers admitted a charge of drunkenness, but denied a charge of having procured h'guor during the .currency of a prohibition order. Inspector Hendrey stated that the accused, who had previously been warned that ho was liable to bo sent to Pakatoa, had been drinking very heavily. He had practically been in a state of drunkenness for weeks on end. Defendant was well connected, but seemed_ to have completely given way to drink. His Worship said>that he would give the defendant another chance, and fined him £3, with the option of fourteen days' imprisonment. The second charge was adjourned till Monday. . For importuning, May Gibbons yjas sent to gaol for one month. Thomas John Knudson and William Sellar, who had indulged in a stand-up fight, were fined 20s each, with the al* ternativs of seven days' imprisonment.
