Four first offenders were convicted for drunkenness by Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., on Saturday. Thos.Shea.han (four previous convictions), who was similarly charged, was fined 40s, with the option of seven days' -imprisonment, and made the subject of a prohibition order. Thomas Newton Withers admitted a charge of drunkenness, but denied a charge of having procured h'guor during the .currency of a prohibition order. Inspector Hendrey stated that the accused, who had previously been warned that ho was liable to bo sent to Pakatoa, had been drinking very heavily.
