SOUTH AFRICAN STRIKE
OUTRAGE AT A MINE ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP ENGINE HOUSE PERPETRATOR ESCAPES. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received January 19, 2 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, This Day. An attempt was made on Saturday night to destroy the engine house on the Vogelstruis Estate mine. The cage, containing the skipman, was being lowered, when a package was tlirown through the window of the engine house. A smell of burning fuse attracted the driver's attention, and he stopped tho engine, saving the skipman's life. The men rushed to the door, and barely reached it before an explosion occurred. The perpetrator escaped without leaving a trace, "STRIKE HERALD" POLICE SURROUND THE OFFICE. RAILWAY RUNNING STAFF RESUMING. (Received January 19, 2 p.m.) PRETORIA, 18th January. Yesterday a leaflet entitled "Strike Herald" was circulated freely. The contents were of such a nature that the police surrounded tho printing offices, arrested and placed in gaol five men, and took possession of a second number of the issue almost ready for 'printing. The running staff of the railways lias decided to resume work. A number of engine-drivers and firemen immediately sigffed on, and will restart with the guards on Monday morning. The employees in the workshops aro undecided, but it is expected that they will soon follow tho example' of the running staff. UNION MEETINGS ALLOWED. LABOUR MEMBER ARRESTED. , (Received January 19, 2 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, 18th Jan. Mr. Williams, a Labour men.ber of the Rand municipality, has been arrested. The town and reefs are now quiet. The police are unarmed, but armed sentries remain at the railway stations, bridges, and other vital points. Meetings of the Tailors', Painters', and other Labour- Unions were allowed in the Trades Hall on a guarantee being given to the martial law authorities.
