WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE. The following vessels should be within wireless range this evening : — Victoria, Riverina, AVestralia, Wahine, Manuka, Maunganui. In range of Chatham Islands : Kumeric and Marama. THE MARAROA. The Mararoa, "having withdrawn from the ferry service, is now laid up indefinitely at Wellington. Tho trip to Lytteiton last uight was taken by the Manuka, which sailed for Melbourne, via south and Hobart. It is considered likely that the Mararoa will enter the coastal passenger trade later on, and will probably be engaged in carrying passengers to Auckland. NEREHANA AT AUCKLAND. At present discharging London cargo at Auckland the Tyser liner Nerehana will be delayed at the Northern i;ort for some days in order to have repairs carried out to one of her boilers. She is due here about the 3rd November. Captain Compton is in command, aud has with him ') the following officers :r— Messrs. F. A. Renaut, | chief, H. B. Smitli second, T. Rigden third, A. R. A NEW COLLIER./ A BLACKBALL COMPANY'S NGAKUTA. An arrival at Lytteiton yesterday was the Blackball Coal Company's new collier Ngakuta, from Mlddlesbrough-on-Tees. In general appearance the Ngakuta is similar to the wellknown colliers Ngntoro and Ngahere, but she is considerably larger thin ejther of those vessels. She was built by Smith's Dock and Engineering Company, Ltd., at Middlesbrough. The Ngakuta is » steel single deck steamer, with a full poop, bridge deck, and forecastle, and is classed 100 Al at Lloyd's under special survey, and to their latest rules. Her dimensions are: Length, 275 ft; beam, 39ft; moulded depth, 18ft Oin; loaded draught, lCft Cm, and has a deadweight capacity of > 2300 tons. For the rapid handling of coal, the Ngakuta is fitted with four diagonal coating and four double geared diagonal winches. The propelling machinery consists of a set of triple-expansion engines driving a single screw, supplied with steam from two large multitubular boilers working at a pressure of 1801b to the square inch. The engines nre designed to give the vessel a speed of 10i knots per hour when fully loaded. The vessel made her steam trials on 20th August, averaging 11.3 knots for four consecutive hours with and against the tide, and taking her departure for New Zealand the same afternoon at 4.30. She camo direct to these waters, via the Cape of Good Hope, and after a moderate weather trip arrived off the Bluff on the 21st last., and at Lytteiton as mentioned above. Her steaming time for the whole distance was 61 days 5 hours 45 minutes, an average of 9.05 knots per hour and 217.17 knots daily. ' Captain Ransom is in charge and has the following officers associated with him : — Chief, Mr. E. C. Strellay-Upton (N.Z.S. Co.); secorid, Mr. H. Woollam; acting-third, Mr. D. Sinclair; chief engineer, Mr. J. Ivesott (guarantee); second, Mr. H. D'Dougall (late Shire Line) ; third, Mr. W. Walker (late Shire Line); chief steward, Mr. J. Caton. From Lytteiton the new collier is proceedjng to Greymouth to land a quantity of mining machinery. Her future movements are not y«t fully decided upon. PERSONAL. Dr. A. G. Waddell, Burgeon on the steamer Dorset, left the vessel at Wellington yesterday. Regulations in regard to the provision of wireless telegraphy on ships engaged in carrying passengers in the foreign or iflter-colonial trade from New Zealand are published in the Gazette. Mr. L. Elngdon has joined the Mapourika as third mate in place of Mr. A. Rathbone, who has gone ashore. ' It is reported that, instead of departing from Auckland at 5.30 p.m. as at present, the sailing time of the Maheno will be altered to 5 p.m. The plans for the Central Wharf have been approved by the Auckland Harbour Board, and its construction will be the next work undertaken in connection with the board's general scheme.
