ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOCIETY The annual meeting of the Wellington Zoological Society was held in the Town Hall last evening, the Rev. J. Crewes presiding over a fair attendance of members. An apology for absence was received from Sir Robert Stout* patron of the society. The report and balance-sheet, the chief features of which have been published in The Post, were adopted. The Mayor, in the course of a ehorf. address, said that the City Council looked upon the Zoo as a splendid asset to th© city. He considered that too many animals should not be put into Newtown Park, as the valuable playing grounds, trees, and "walks ehould be preserved. As an appreciation of the work of the Rev. J. Crewes in connection with the Zoo, Mr. H. Parkinson presented him with a fountain pen, suitably inscribed, on behalf of the young people interested in the Zoo. The recipient suitably t» sponded, stating that ne was 1 glad that his efforts had been, appreciated by th© younger people. He would always do his best for them. On tho suggestion of Mr. Castle, it was decided to continue the art competition this summer on similar lines to those held last year, which had proved most successful. An expressiop of high appreciation waa tendered to Dr. Chalmers Mitchell, of the London Zoological Society, for the strong appeal he had made for the preservation, of the world's fauna. ■ - The officere elected for the ensuing ( year are as follow : — Patron, his Honour Sir Robert Stout, K.C.M.G. ; vice-patron, his Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. Underwood, Winter, Rev. J. Ward, Messrs. R. Brown, R. H. Chinchen, E. Collie, H. J. Crewes, G. Flux, M. G. Grenside, A. R. Hornblow, W. Martin, R. Morrish, J. Newhouse, A. E. Parker, J. Pollock, S. H. UnderwoodL F. J. Caterer, A. Crosby, and T. Fathers; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Castle' ;' auditor, Mr. R. H. Chinchen. ... Smith, of New Plymouth, -suddenly disappeared some time ago, and it -was thought to have been lost. However, Mr. Crewes was pleased to say that it was recently discovered living in a burrow, which it had excavated. A vote of thanks was passed to the Rev. J. Crowes', who had compiled a list of the animals and birds at the Zoo, as published in the society's annual report. Mr. Leslie, custodian of the Town ' Hall, was also thanked for services rendered.
