APPOINTMENT OF NEW JUDGES

FULL STATEMENT PROMISED. Quite a long time was taken up in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon on the subject of the appointnient of two additional Judges of tho Supreme Court. The Statutes Revision Committee reported on tho Judicature Amendment Bill, which provides for the appointment of the Judges in question. The Opposition took advantage of the opportunity to urge that there was some diiference of opinion between the Judges, and a strong demand was made for the production of the reports of the Bench on the subject. The Minister of Justice (Hon. A. L. ,Herdman) told the House that he regarded Judges' reports as confidential, but he promised to take the House into his confidence when the Bill came up for its second reading. He would then make a full statement to the House on the subject. If the Judges were overworked it was the duty of the Government to supply tho deficiency. Ho was convinced from what had come under his notice since he had been a member of the Cabinet that 'there was urgent need for some assistance on the Supreme Court Bench. A motion to refer the report back to the Committee was defeated by 33 to 23, and the Bill has now to come before the House for discussion in a more formal manner.
