MUNICIPAL ACCOUNTS
Municipal accounts was the themo o! an interesting address by Mr. J. H. Barton to the New Zealand Society of Ac- , countants u last evening. Mr. Barton referred to the case of the Nelson Borough gasworks, which undertaking showed an overdraft, leading ratepayers to believe that—on the accounts as prepared accoiding to tho Act — a. Icbs had beon incurred whereas the application of a proper principle of accountancy showed that a substantial profit had boon made. The system of the Wellington City Council's electric lighting and tramway account*-- v/as warmly commended by Mr. Barton, 110 'tuggested that all municipal bodies embarking in trading should oresent their accounts in such v way Ihat ratepayers would be given Ihe true financial lesults of the undertakings. Mr. Barton was heartily thanked for his address.
