STORMY WEATHER
CONDITIONS MODERATING MORE WIND AND RAIN PREDICTED. To-day has brought an appreciable moderation in the weather, but conditions are still very "wintrified." The storm is now confined to Cook Strait, although it has been rough elsewhere. There were hail squalls in Auckland last night and squally and rough weather prevailed in other parts of New Zealand. The centre of the disturbance ho.wever, has really moved to the eastward, and fine weather prevails in m.ost parts of the South Island. ' Indications are for strong southerly winds changing to the west, increasing "southerlies" giving place to increasing "westerlies." The weather is likely to be cold and changeable generally, squally at times, with heavy showers in the North Island. The night will probably be very cold everywhere, with frosts inland. Although the southerly storm has been severely felt in the Hutt Valley, no serious damage is reported. There is a jooticeable swelling in the waters of the Hutt River to-day, the gauge at the bridge registering a. rise of nearly four feet above summer level 1 .
