He witnessed the murder of his own mother and sister in Nana Sahib's massacre at Cawnpore. Of late years he acted as gatekeeper at the Agricultural Societies' Grounds. Sir Samuel Griffith (Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia) states that he is not aware of his reported appointment to the Imperial Appellate Court. BROKEN OFF MARRIAGE. LONDON, 20th August. In May last a sensation was caused in Calcutta by the breaking off of the marriage 'of the daughter of the Gaekwar of Baroda with a brother of the Maharajar of Kuch Behar on the eve of the ceremony. It is now announced that the marriage will take place in London. The Gaekwar, who is touring in Switzerland, will not attend the ceremony. SEVENTY MILES AN HOUR. LONDON, 20th August. Captain Longcroft, of the Royal Flying Corps, flew, with a passenger on board, from Aldershot to Montrose (Scotland), with one stop, in 7 hours 40 minutes, averaging about 70 miles an hour. Considerable mystery surounds thfe report of the inheritance by Tunstall, a Bolton labourer, of a large fortune from a West Australian relative named Westell (who was engaged in the pearling'industry). A West Australian agency states that nobody named Westell was connected- with the pearling industry. Tunstall's whereabouts is unknown. It was supposed that he had sailed. by the' Omrah, but a wireless message received states that no passenger of that name was on board. The Colonial Sugar Company, at a special meeting, confirmed its previously reported resolution to increase its capital from three t» four millions sterling, issuing 50,000 new £20 shares. MILITARY BAND FOR AUCKLAND EXHIBITION. LONDON, 20th August. Forty-three members of the Royal Artillery Band will represent England at tha Auckland Exhibition.
