Mr. Hiley was born in June, 1870, and educated at Rossall School, Lancashire. He commenced his business career on the sub-editorial staff of the Exchange Telegraph Company in December, 1888. He entered the services of the North-Eastern Railway on Ist October, 1891, on being offered a • position in the accountant's department at Newcastle. x Qn Ist May. 1894, Mr.' Hiley was transferred to the office of the superintendent of the line, as assistant to the general inspector. On Ist June, 1895, Mr. Hiley was appointed to institute «and manage the Nor^th-Eastern Railway advertising department, and at the same time undertaking the supervision of matters relative to the East Coast Scotch train service. Mr. Hiley was next promoted (in July, 1901) to the position of chief clerk in the district superintendent's office at York. Seven months later he was appointed assistant district superintendent at Newcastle. On Ist April, 1004, Mr. Hiley took up the position of district superintendent of the York (southern) district. Mr. Hiley was appointed chief passenger agent of the. Great Northern Railway on Ist January. 1905, but resigned that post to take up his present position with his old company, on its becoming vacant at the end of March, 1908.
