FOOTBALL

THE RUGBY GAME CLUBS' ANNUAL MEETINGS , ORIENTAL. Already there is football in the air. The various senior and other clubs have begun to meet to consider their annual report, and prepare for tHe approaching winter. Mr. W. H. Nimmo presided at the annual meeting of the Oriental Club held last evening. The annual report contains the congratulations of the committee to the third fifteen on winning the third-class championship, coming through the season without a loss. This team played the third-class representatives, defeating them by a substantial margin. A match was also played against the Lyttelton team (winners of the third-class championship in Christchurch), and ova team succeeded' in beating them by 6to 3. The seniors gained third place after a hard battle against casualties. The junior team <Jid well, and finished level with another team for second place honours; the championship being won by Petone who are to be congratulated on coming through the season- without a point being scored . against them. The thik'd team came out on top, probably due to the consistent way in which they trained. The fourth "fifteen did not do so well, this being probably due to the lack of coaching. The fifth did not do well at 'all, and here the need of a coach was severely felt. The Wednesday team finished rtihners-up in their^ competition. The records of the team are as follow :~ i V « i :i * '0* feS hI Q fi fk Senior ... 14 11 3 — 156 55 Junior ... 9 7 2—Bo 45 Third ... 14 .13 0 v 1 194 90 Fourth ... 11 3 7 1' 21 125 Fifth ... 12 ' 0 12 . — ' 0. 211 In representative games, the club was represented 'by Messrs. The annual benefit match with the Poneke Club is to be played on 29th March. WELLINGTON CLUB. . Mr. T. S. Ronaldson presided at the Wellington Club's meeting last evening. The forty-third annual ' report states that the finances of the club are in a slightly better condition than last year, though not quite as flourishing as could be desired. This is due to the predominanceof young players, but as many of these have' now attained the age of 20 years, they will be liable for • tne larger subscription of 12s 6d in future, and the credit balance' next year should 1 , therefore, be larger than at present. Tn the championship matches, the.jsenjor team, though not quite as successful as expected, performed very creditably, putting up some sterling fights against the stronger teams, and as it contained many young players, should do well this season. Matches played, 12; wpn, 3; drawn, 2 ; lost, 7 ; championship points, 8. The second fifteen, considering that it was much lighter than the majority of its opponents, and was composed largely of new members, gave a very good account of..itself. Matches played, 12 ; won, 4 ; lost, 8 ; championship points, 8. The third fifteen appeared to enjoy their games thoroughly. Matches played, 11 ; won, 5 ; drawn, 1 ; lost 5 ; championship points, 11. The fourth fifteen, although it di&piajeo. as much enthusi asm as the third fifteen, did not meet with the same measure of success. R. Lambert, as the best player in the senior fifteen, holds the Pownall Cup for another year. It is with much regret that thb committee has to record the death ot Mr. F. Pownall, • one of the vice-presi-dents, and the donor of the valuable Pownall Cup referred to in the previous paragraph. The congratulations of the club are extended to T. M. Grace, R. Lambert, R*. Mackenzie, and G. Miller, on having represented their province, to J. Smith and G. Hampson on being selected in the third-class representatives, and to J. Mulcahey, D. Miller, and C.
