SALARY AND CONSCIENCE
The Hon. Almeric Paget, member of the House of Commons for Cambridge, has sent one-fourth of his salary for last year, which his conscience tells him he ha» not earned, to the Mayor of Cambridge for charitable purposes. Writing frojn the South of France, the member for Cambridge say«K — % Dear Mr. Mayor,— Pray forgive me if, i& the nattio of charity, I ask you to undertake still one more task, appreciatE fully as I do tho numerous calls on r time. As you may be aware I « been obliged, under doctor's oi i der3, to absent myself from Parliamentary duties for some weeks pasi, and it will be come weeks yet before I am allowed to return. It is on my conscience, therefore, that I am drawing a salary which I am unable to earn, and as no law ha* yet been promulgated , or passed whereby a member is paid m proportion to his attendances, I now ask you to accept my kst quarter's Parliamentary salary of ' £100, herewith enclosed, to be given in your discretion in aid of whatever local charities you may think most dewi-^ipg of assistance or support.— Yours faithfully, Almeric Paget.
