PANAMA CANAL PROSPECTS
In view of the forthcoming opening of the Panama Canal (says a London paper), considerable attention is being given by & number of shipping companies to the possibility of developing the Pacific Coast of North America as a field for emigration. A big expansion of business between Europe and the West of Canada and the United States is expected when tho waterway is ready for traffic ; but two of the German lines are credited with the intention of carrying steerage passengers from Hamburg, Bremen, Cherbourg, Plymouth, Genoa, and Naples to San Pedro, San Francisco, Seattle, and other Pacific centres at the same rates which are at present charged to New York, in addition to the dues that will have to be paid for the privilege of passing through the Canal. All the companies interested in the route have made a thorough investigation of the facilities available at likely ports of call, and many harbour improvement schemes, involving a huge expenditure, are in progress.
