LOCAL AND GENERAL » It is expected that the Government will shortly announce its nominees for the two vacancies on the directorate of the Bank of New Zealand, caused by tho retirement of Messrs. Harold Beauchamp and J. M. Johnston, under the Bank of New Zealand and Banking Act Amendment Act, 1898. The Government appoints four directors, the others being Messrs. William Milne and D. J, Nathan. Mr. Beauchamp, who was chairman of' the bank for many years, was recently reappointed in succession to Mr. J. B. Reid, and he is acting-chair-man during Mi*. Kennedy's absehco in Great Britain. Messrs. Beauchamp and_ Johnston retire on 31st March. Their successors (if any) must be appointed by the Governor in-Gotihcil not later thanthe first Wednesday in March. Tho election of a chairman is held in April. _ If the night is clear residents of Wellington will have an opportunity of witnessing a total eclipse of the moon on the evening of Saturday, 22nd mat. Prisoner pleaded that the desertion was due to an accident, but Dr. M f Arthur pointed out that accused had signed for the round trip, and the steamship owners had frequently to pay £40, £50, and even £60 lo supply the place of deserters. If they could easily fill their place, they Would probably not take tho trouble to prosecute. Acknowledgment of a donation of £25 made under the auspices of the Wellington Trades Council towards assisting the relatives of the miners who were killed in the Mount Lyell disaster, has been received by Mr. L. M. A. Rearden, secretary of the council, from the Federated Mine-employees' Association of Australia. The council is thanked most heartily for its generous assistance, and the money (it ia added) has been distributed without delay. The donation, it was stated, came at a most opportune time.
