GIRL'S SERIOUS OFFENCE

SETTING FIRE TO A HOUSE. A serious charge was brought against a 16-year-old girl named Ivy Myrtle Strong, before Mr. Riddell, S.M., to-day, when it was alleged that she set fire to St. Mary's Home, Karc-ri, on the 10th inst. Chief-Detective Broberg conducted the prosecution, Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for accused, intimated that after the taking of the evidence a plea of guilty would be entered. Doris Cook, an inmatei of the home, stated that on the evening of 10th Feb- | ruary she noticed smoke coming from a cupboard, which she opened. She found that some tags which nad been used for beea-waxing the . fjpor were burning. She called for assistance, and the fire was extinguished. Emily Logan, also an inmate of the home, deposed that on the date in question accused said she had dreamed three times that there -was a fire, and that meant that a fire was sure to happen. Accused also asked witness if in the event of a fire witnees -would take her to her place. Shortly afterwards witness saw Doris Cook carrying out some burning rags. Elizabeth Telfer, sub-matron, also gave evidence. Detective Andrews, who arrested ac> cU6ed, deposed that the gM admitted having set fire to the Tags, and stated that her reason was that «he thought if the home was burned she would be allowed to return to her own people. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. His Worship remarked that from the ovidence it did not appeaT that accused realised the seriom nature of the offence with which she was charged. Chief-Detective Broberg said that the girl had threatened to commit suicide. His Worship said accused would be allowed to remain in the home till she was brought before the Supreme Court, but in the meantime she must behave herself ami obey the authorities of the home.
