General Beyers, South African Commandant, has announced that 55,000 men have volunteered for military service. ' I'Last month General Beyers was interviewed at Pietennaritzburg. He said he was delighted at the practical effects of the Defence Act Ihe calculations were originally, based on a total of 70,000 for the first year, but 25,000 was nearer the mark. He said he favoured sending six officers to England to qualify as air pilots, although aviation would be difficult on the high veldt.]
