SEISMIC WAVES THE WEST COAST EARTHQUAKE
RECORD IN SYDNEY NOT WHAT HAD BEEN EXPECTED. By lelegfnph.—Press Association.— Copyright. (Received February 25, 8.5 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Government Astronomer reports that the New Zealand earthquake was "registered in Sydney, but that the reCord Was not what might have been oxpected from the cabled accounts. The seismic waves caused only a very small displacement here. The centre of the disturbance had most likely occurred in strata directly under the surface. The Oarthwaves would thus quickly reach the surface and cause considerable damage, but the severity would be felt only locally. The tremor reached here at fifteen minutes two seconds past 11 o'clock on the morning of the 22nd, and the maximum wae reached at eighteen minutes nine seconds past 11. The largest waves were only of 0.4 millimetres amplitude,
