IMPROVEMENTS TO BE EFFECTED.One of the objects of the recently formed Western Hutt Ratepayers' Association was to gain fluich-needed ilii-' provefflente in the surface drainage iiv Alicetown. As the result of its repreeejitations the engineer at Lowpv Hutt (Mr. W. J. Roche) was instructed to bring up a report on the matter. Copies of this comprehensive survey of the position were sent to those interested in AliceI'towji, and a wrifct&n reply was forwarded | from the association to /the Works Com--mitte© of the Hutt Borough Council.* This resulted in the following recomman-t dation being made by the Works Committee at last night's meeting of t«he Borough Cduncil :~"That the proposals of the engineer for surface drainage at the northern and southern portions of Victoria and Cuba street*, and for the ckaoiing out of certain sumps, and the provision of a' sump near the pumping station at 'the south ,end of Victoriastrflefc, receive the favourable consideration of the council to carry out the works as soon as tho engineer can spare the men for that purpose. The work also to include the extension of the drain to. the southern boundary of the School property." In answer to a question, the engineer stated that the total cost of the work, would be about £290. The Mayor (Mr. E. P. Bunny) stated that the work was absolutely necessary as conditions were so bad at present that some of the^ people could hardly live in their houses in the winter. Af ter aome further remarks, the recommendation was put to the" meeting and carried.
